Position Details

Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the Development Officer is responsible for major gift fundraising.

Responsibilities include:

Actively manage assigned $100,000+ prospects, devising and implementing individual cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.

Solicit multi-year campaign commitments while achieving annual gift income goals of $500,000 to $1M+ dependent upon prospect pool ratings and anticipated yield.

Frequent national travel to meet with prospects and to represent the university at regional events.

Understand and have ability to articulate the University’s campaign fundraising priorities and gift opportunities.

Involve university leadership and volunteers in fundraising strategies with specific prospects as appropriate, including arranging visits and drafting correspondence.

Manage President’s relationship with assigned prospects especially those rated at $1M+.

Participate in developing annual event strategies for assigned regions to engage prospects as hosts and attendees. Oversee development functions (small dinners, prospect receptions) as required.

Devise reunion gift strategies for assigned prospects and collaborate with colleagues in the Wesleyan Fund to meet reunion and annual fund goals.

Present gift planning opportunities to prospects and involve gift planning officer as needed.

Work collaboratively with other development officers, planned gift colleagues, other members of University Relations and the campus community to contribute proactively to the team’s overall success.

Attend/participate in 5 – 7 weekend events on campus and regionally each year.

Efficient completion and documentation of visit and event follow-up including appropriate correspondence, proposals, and contact reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of progressively responsible fundraising and professional experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.

Demonstrated ability to engage individuals and articulate institutional needs, while exercising discretion and maintaining confidentiality.

Proven ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications

Fundraising experience with Wesleyan, other highly selective liberal arts educational institutions, or non-profits.

Direct experience soliciting, negotiating, and closing major gifts.

Comprehensive campaign experience including quiet, public, and post campaign phases.

Record of successful collaboration with sophisticated volunteers and senior administrative officers.
