Position Details

The Office of University Communications shares the stories of Wesleyan University—highlighting the achievements of our university and its students, faculty, and alumni, in pictures and in words. Located in historic South College with several satellite locations across the campus, the office develops and executes university-wide and specific strategic marketing and communications efforts.

Reporting to the Director of University Communications the Copy Editor/Writer supports a variety of editorial needs in the Office of Communications, among them writing with creative flair to produce marketing copy and serving as a careful copy editor and proofreader to assure that Wesleyan’s publications – print and electronic – meet high editorial standards.

Responsibilities include:

Work with staff of Communications and individuals from other University offices to draft text for marketing projects ranging from brochures and catalogs to web pages and email campaigns.

Help to assure that Wesleyan’s publications adhere to brand identity guidelines and support the University’s communications goals.

Edit copy submitted by others with flair and gusto to ensure that Wesleyan’s publications have a lively, engaging voice – free from tired bureaucratic language.

Ensure that copy submitted by University clients is grammatically correct and conforms to University style guidelines.

Check for factual accuracy; ensure that facts and messages about the University are accurate and consistent among various publications produced on campus.

Maintain the University style guide for use in University Communications and other campus departments.

Monitor and approve events for the University calendar; prepares the weekly calendar e-mail push to the campus community.

Serve as a general assignment writer for a variety of projects, as needed.

Serve as backup to the Newsletter Editor, capable of sending the Wesleyan Connection.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years copy editing and proofreading experience, or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.

Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, familiarity with AP and Chicago style conventions, excellent spelling and grammar skills.

Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail and an ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.

Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects at the same time.

An enthusiastic contributor to team effort.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with
individuals of different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
