Position Details

The Wesleyan University Music Department seeks a highly qualified specialist in any area of African music performance, a field of teaching and performance represented at the university for many decades. This is a full-time position, to begin July 1, 2018, for an initial 4-year term, with the possibility of renewal and promotion.

DUTIES:
• Directing ensembles each semester from elementary to advanced levels;
• Collaborating with the Dance Department’s Artist-in-Residence in West African dance for annual or semi-annual concert performances;
• Teaching occasional courses in areas of special interest (at the undergraduate or graduate level) with a frequency to be determined by the needs of the program;
• Maintaining active career as an artist and/or scholar;
• Advising undergraduate senior projects and honors theses, and graduate theses.
• The teaching load is five courses (including ensembles) per academic year.

INSTITUTION: Courses given by Wesleyan’s Music department range from introductory to graduate level. The program offers a strong undergraduate Major, an M.A. in music, and a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, all with a long-standing interest in performance and cultural studies. Particular areas of strength include: experimental and electronic, American, African, East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and European musics.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Professional performance skills, strong interest in scholarship, at least one year of experience working in a college or university environment, and a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in music or a related field.
