Position Details

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts (CFA) supports the technical and production needs of the departments of dance, music, theater and art and art history, student groups and University departments, and serves as a cultural center for the campus, Middletown and the region by presenting a wide variety of events and exhibitions ranging from student and faculty works to internationally acclaimed ensembles. The CFA works to elevate the arts as a means of teaching, learning and knowing, and to integrate the arts into all aspects of campus, and directs the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance, the first US-based graduate program in performance curation.

The Associate Director for Programming and Performance works closely with and reports to the Director of the Center for the Arts, overseeing event support for the CFA’s four member arts departments and planning and managing visiting artist engagements and residencies.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Understand the needs of faculty in constituent departments and foster collaborative relationships across campus.

Support the research of artists to bring to the CFA, determine feasibility of engagements, and schedule performances and residencies.

Contextualize artists and programs for CFA staff, campus, and community both in writing and in oral presentations.

Coordinate faculty/student committees charged with advising on artist selection and residency development.

Represent the CFA across campus and as needed at meetings and conferences.


Understand the needs of visiting artists and work with Campus and Community Engagement Manager to provide the interface between them and students, faculty, audiences, and the community.

Oversee the staff that schedules CFA venues and provides event support for meetings, concerts, lectures, exhibitions, performances, and other activities requested by Wesleyan student groups, departments, faculty, staff and area organizations and schools.

Work with CFA staff to ensure contract fulfillment.

Support the development and oversight of event and residency budgets, and facilitate the work of key staff to manage responsibly within them.

Support the clear and timely dissemination of event information to CFA staff and departments.

Support the ongoing program management of the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance

Support fundraising and grants management including proposal development, reporting, cultivation, and stewardship.

In conjunction with CFA financial manager create clear and effective budgets for artistic programs

Collaborate with CFA leadership and others on the Center’s long-term planning and day-to-day effectiveness.


Supervise the Assistant Director of Programs.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 3 or more years experience in managing performing arts organizations or programs, or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.

Deep and broad interests in contemporary performance.

Track record in collaborative program development

Experience in budget management.

Experience in grant writing and reporting.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-Graduate Certificate or Master’s degree in related field.

4 or more years experience in in managing performing arts organizations or programs.

Familiarity with institutions of higher education and/or working with academic partners

Experience in supervising staff.

Experience in drafting and negotiating contracts.

Experience in financial modeling.

Demonstrated vision in the creation of performing arts programs and artist residencies.

Experience in higher education.
