Position Details

Wesleyan University’s Shapiro Writing Center, in conjunction with the Department of English concentration in Creative Writing, invites applications for an Assistant Professor of the Practice in Creative Writing beginning September 1, 2018. Field of specialization is multi-genre. This is a 9-month position, for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of renewal and promotion, based on teaching and record of publication.

This position will support Creative Writing across the university, including the Creative Writing Concentration in the English Department, the Writing Certificate and any new innovations in structure and curriculum regarding Creative Writing in the following ways:
• Teaching and development of 3 undergraduate creative writing courses each year (at least one course in fall and one in spring, plus a third that could be in fall, spring, Summer Session or Winter Session). Courses can be on the craft, reading and/or analysis of fiction, nonfiction, poetry or graphic fiction.
• Support for undergraduate students, such as: advising and mentoring students; developing and implementing workshops for the Wesleyan poets and other students around the university and across the curriculum; supporting the concentration in Creative Writing in the English Major, the Writing Certificate and creative writing within the Shapiro Center; and taking an active part in a lively community of students and faculty interested in creative writing across the curriculum.
• Support for the Writing at Wesleyan Reading series, such as: supervising student workers at events, managing the visiting writers during campus visits, helping to organize the writers’ schedules, working with students to write and practice student introductions and hosting readings.
• Support the Director of Creative Writing in the overall management and innovation of Creative Writing across the university.

There will also be the possibility to propose additional courses beyond the three contracted courses, for additional overload compensation. Professors of the practice are not tenure-track positions, but are renewable positions based on performance, budget, and continued need.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should have one published book in any genre, and demonstrated success in teaching fiction, nonfiction and poetry in a liberal arts college setting like Wesleyan.

Candidates must have a terminal degree in creative writing, either MFA or PhD, in hand by the time of appointment.

Candidates must have leadership experience within higher education, and history serving within a liberal arts institution like Wesleyan.
