Position Details

The Office of Institutional Research serves as the major source of official data, research, and decision support for University administrators.

Reporting to the Director of Institutional Research, the Associate Director works independently and in collaboration with the Director and others to conduct, manage, and support the accurate and timely collection and dissemination of information across a broad range reporting, research, and decision-support activities.

The Associate Director will also collaborate with others to support, guide, and implement a transformation of the University’s data and reporting infrastructure.

Responsibilities include:


Design, administer and analyze various institutional surveys and research studies

Provide data and statistics to internal and external audiences

Support university planning efforts through institutional research, policy analysis, and outcomes assessment

Prepare creative dashboards, reports, and data summaries to inform policy and assess progress toward University goals

Prepare, publish, and present reports to management and internal audiences regarding institutional planning, policy, and decision-making

Compile benchmark information about peer institutions

Provide research and evaluation consultation and expertise to various university offices and departments

Support the Director in representing the office on various campus committees and provide analytical support to university offices and committees


Query large relational databases and a nascent data warehouse for reporting and analysis purposes

Manage external and internal reporting (IPEDS, CDS, administrative dashboards, guidebooks, etc.)

Develop and employ creative data visualizations and summaries

Manage IR data marts and partner with cross-functional team to implement a new data warehouse

Design, construct, and maintain systems for disseminating information and fostering the culture of data-informed
decision making across campus

Update, automate, and document data and business processes

Work with campus partners on data definitions, reporting standards, and data governance


Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in social science, computer science, statistics, business or a related field with course work in statistics and research methods with at least three years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and changing priorities effectively and efficiently

Intermediate SAS, SQL, or equivalent programming skills, including working with large datasets

Demonstrated ability, experience, and effectiveness working with large-scale relational databases and integrating data from multiple sources

Experience summarizing data using descriptive and inferential statistics

Strong computer skills, including advanced MS Excel and Word

Effective analytical, quantitative, and communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate technical information in verbal, written and graphic form to a variety of audiences

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and timelines

Ability and willingness to reevaluate and improve analytical, reporting, and survey activities

Demonstrated ability to be tactful, discreet, diplomatic, and able to deal with confidential information

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree in social science, computer science, statistics, business or a related field with course work in statistics and research methods

At least five years related experience in the use of data or business analysis, with at least two years in an institutional research office

Advanced SAS skills, particularly in data extraction and report writing

Proven ability to produce creative and effective data summaries and visualizations

Experience with higher education reporting including IPEDS, guidebooks, and CDS

Experience with of survey design, administration, and software (Qualtrics preferred);

A strong background in statistical analysis, spreadsheet applications, and database management systems

Demonstrated experience with student information systems

A strong background in survey and social science research

Self motivation to perform a wide range of institutional research and data activities.
