Position Details

The Fries Center for Global Studies is committed to helping members of the university community achieve the knowledge, language skills, and sensitivity needed in order to exercise effective and responsible citizenship in an increasingly inter-dependent world.

Within the Fries Center for Global Studies, the Office of Study Abroad develops and provides a variety of experiential learning opportunities for Wesleyan students, faculty and staff. Approximately 40% of Wesleyan students participate in one or more of these opportunities by the time they graduate.

The Study Abroad Advisor plays an active role in promoting study abroad among the Wesleyan faculty, students, and staff and in interactions with our consortial partners and with the greater education abroad community of providers and partner institutions.

The advisor cultivates relationships with these constituencies in order to provide our highly motivated students with the best opportunities for developing their language proficiency, global knowledge, and intercultural sensitivity.

The advisor guides students through the study abroad process, from application to re-entry and beyond.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Study Abroad, the Study Abroad Advisor’s responsibilities include:

ADVISING STUDENTS

Advise study abroad applicants concerning program options, the application process, and Wesleyan’s financial and academic policies and protocols

Run group advising and information sessions (e.g., “First Steps” meetings).

Coordinate pre-departure orientation and re-entry sessions with other members of the FCGS staff

Recruit and organize study abroad returnees to volunteer as peer advisors and to serve on the Fries Center for Global Studies Student Advisory Board

Support the Associate Director and Emergency Response Team in risk management and emergency response for students abroad

MANAGING THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Track each applicants progress in completing the study abroad application according to schedule

Maintain student files and records

In collaboration with Associate Director, review applications and determine students’ eligibility to study abroad

PROMOTING STUDY ABROAD

Serve as liaison with partner institutions and study abroad providers

Organize annual study abroad fairs and provider visits

Attend and present at events across campus such as Admission events and orientations

Collect, analyze, and share study abroad data with various stakeholders

Collaborate with other staff on social media, website, print, and other promotional efforts

Maintain involvement with professional associations, including attending conferences, presenting, and/or volunteering for leadership roles

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study and at least 2 years of experience in international education, study abroad or closely related field (student experience in working in a study abroad office will be considered) or an equivalent combination of education, training and work experience.

Experience with engaging and extempore public speaking.

Strong high-touch customer service skills required.

Effective communication and excellent, technological, organizational, and multi-tasking skills

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field and at least 2 years of experience working in a study abroad office strongly preferred

Experience with study abroad program administration

Experience with using software or electronic applications for study abroad

Proficiency in a second language (intermediate level or higher).
